SLOW MOTION is a collection of performance-based video works by Sally Decker and Briana Marela, David Bird, Aaron Einbond, and Alec Hall, with performances by Ensemble Dal Niente and lovemusic. SLOW MOTION explores connections between performance, video, and image, focusing on themes of contained motion, destructive loops, and dislocation. Tense and liberating layers of bodily self-study…3D scenes of loss, solitude, and dislocation…a cyclical journey of motivational and demotivational quotations…an historic cityscape recast as both familiar and distant…these are some of the audio-visual images woven together by the performances of SLOW MOTION.
Sally Decker and Briana Marela’s "Small Tremble In Slow Motion" weaves together a series of vignettes that explore presentness within experiences of deep emotional contraction. David Bird's "What Glows is Fuchsia" immerses members of the Strasbourg-based lovemusic collective in a dynamic virtual environment. Alec Hall's “Spin" takes us on a cyclical journey as he weaves together motivational quotations from Peloton instructors with the de-motivational statements from Vanessa Place’s Litany of Self-Loathing. Aaron Einbond's “Attempt at Exhausting a Place” transports the audience to Paris’s Place Saint Sulpice through field recordings recasting Georges Perec’s descriptions of the city in 1974 as both familiar and distant today. Chicago-based Ensemble Dal Niente features in performances of Hall’s and Einbond’s works pushing the music video medium to extremes of action and stasis.
Video is integral to the music of SLOW MOTION as each work’s progress, sometimes moving, sometimes still, reaches the audience’s eyes and ears in different ways. That is why Carrier’s innovative digital release includes streaming links of each work in HD video as well making them available for download. Upon purchase, a bonus track will be made available which includes high resolution download and streaming links for each piece.
Coinciding with the release of these video works, Surface World will simultaneously release Small Tremble in Slow Motion as an audio-only digital album which additionally includes the duo’s culminating performance from their 2021 Qubit “Innovator Lab” residency, paired with a limited-edition, 22-card Oracle card deck inspired by the piece and illustrated by Madeline Waits.
